"VEHIVAVY MIFANOHANA" INITIATIVE

Vehivavy Mifanohana Project or Solidarity Among Women Project

Creation of a shelter and training center for single mothers and their children in Tamatave, on the east coast of Madagascar.

Context and Challenges :

Tamatave, the economic capital of Madagascar’s east coast, faces severe social disparities. Young single mothers are especially vulnerable—often rejected by their families and pushed into extreme poverty. A lack of sexual education and poverty-related violence contribute to high rates of early pregnancies, further marginalizing these women. The “Vehivavy Mifanohana” project aims to address this urgent issue by offering single mothers the chance for a better future.

Project Objective:

The main objective is to strengthen the resilience of single mothers and their children by providing them with a comprehensive support framework and tailored vocational training. The creation of a reception and training center aims to take care of the children, thereby freeing up valuable time for vulnerable mothers. This center will provide quality vocational training, allowing women to acquire practical skills and access dignified and sustainable employment. In addition, medical and psychological support will be provided for the beneficiaries, with particular attention given to family planning and reproductive health.

Locations and Partnerships :

The project is located in Tamatave, in the disadvantaged neighborhood of Vohitsara. A 1000 m² plot of land has been funded to host the reception and training center, which is currently under construction. The main partners are : Mitia Madagasikara: Local NGO specializing in child and family assistance. Association Miray: Responsible for the reception, training, and monitoring of beneficiaries. EDI Madagascar: Luxembourg-based NGO specializing in project financing and management.
Malagasy local authorities: Support from the Ministries of Justice, Population, and Education.

Impacts and Benefits :

The project aims to support 40 single mothers and their children during our intervention. Once completed, the center will be able to accommodate 25 beneficiaries per year. These mothers will receive integrated support to help them undergo training, find employment, and rebuild themselves both personally and professionally. The project will also generate positive outcomes for the local economy by creating employment opportunities and supporting the education of young people in Tamatave through awareness initiatives.

Sustainability and Governance :

The project fully aligns with the priorities of the Madagascar Emergence Plan (IEM), aiming to promote women’s empowerment and sustainable development. The Miray Association, as the project manager, will ensure the sustainability of the infrastructure and services through a strong local and international partnership, thus guaranteeing the long-term success of the project. This project offers each vulnerable woman a chance to escape poverty, regain financial independence, and create a better future for herself and her children.
