Initiative "Vehivavy Mifanohana"

Projet Vatosoa

Creation of a shelter and training center for single mothers and their children in Tamatave, Madagascar

Context and Challenges

Tamatave, the economic capital of Madagascar’s east coast, faces significant social disparities. Young single mothers are particularly vulnerable, often rejected by their families and pushed into precarious living conditions. The lack of sexual education and the violence linked to poverty result in a high incidence of early pregnancies, further marginalizing these women. The "Vehivavy Mifanohana" project addresses this urgent situation by aiming to offer single mothers a better future.

Project Objectives :

The overall objective is to increase the resilience of mothers and their children by providing them with a supportive environment and vocational training. The shelter and training center will aim to:

Care for the children, thereby freeing up time for the mothers.
Provide vocational training to help women acquire skills for stable employment.
Offer medical and psychological support to the beneficiaries, with a special focus on family planning and mental health.

Location and Partnerships

The project will be implemented in Tamatave, in disadvantaged neighborhoods such as Andranomadio, Valpinson, and Mangarano. A 600 m² plot of land is under negotiation to house the center.
The project duration is 36 months (01/04/2024 – 31/03/2027). The main partners are:

Mitia Madagasikara: Local NGO specializing in child and family support.
Association Vatosoa: Responsible for welcoming, training, and following up with beneficiaries.
EDI Madagascar: Luxembourg-based NGO specializing in financing and managing projects.
Local authorities: Support from the Ministries of Justice, Population, and Education.

Impact and Beneficiaries

The project aims to enable them to train, find employment, and rebuild themselves both personally and professionally. It will also generate positive impacts on the local economy by creating job opportunities and supporting the education of young people in Tamatave through awareness initiatives.

Sustainability and Governance

The project fully aligns with the priorities of the Madagascar Emergence Plan (IEM), aiming to promote the empowerment of women and sustainable development. The Vatosoa Association, as the project manager, will ensure the sustainability of the infrastructure and services through a strong local and international partnership, thus guaranteeing the long-term success of the project. This project offers each woman a chance to escape poverty, regain financial independence, and create a better future for herself and her children.
